Cheer Up, Sleepy Jean:  How to Get More Sleep to Improve Your Mood

 

The amount of sleep you get each day has a huge impact on your mood and performance for each day.   Not getting enough can cause you to be irritable, sluggish, and it can cause your body’s cortisol/stress levels to rise as well as your immune system to decline.  Here are some tips for helping you to get a good night’s sleep:

 

  • Get more sleep, at least 8 hours a night.  Choose a reasonable bed time and stick to it.
  • Take a bath before bed to relax yourself.
  • Turn off all the lights.
  • Reduce the noise of your TV or radio.  White noise is the best for a sound sleep.
  • Lower your body’s temperature.  Cooling down your body allows you to drift to sleep quicker.
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before bed.
  • Avoid smoking, drinking or caffeine before bedtime to allow your body to relax.
  • Make sure you have a good mattress and set of pillows to allow for maximum comfort while in bed.
  • Don’t sleep with your pets… their constant movement can disturb your sleep, or hog your bed and force you to sleep in a position that is not ideal.
  • Take an aspirin before bed to reduce any aches or pain that may keep you up.
